This Glaoui rug was hand-woven by Naima and her sister-in-law Latifa.
Naima and Latifa learned how to weave from their mother, Mlouka. The matriarch of the collective, she has passed the art of weaving down to her daughters, daughters-in-law, cousins, and villagers.
As she is getting older, her daughter Naima has stepped in to oversee the teaching process.
This rug style is known as Glaoui. It is an extremely technical weave and took Naima & Latifa 7 weeks to complete. The Glaoui style incorporates three techniques: Hand weaving, hand knotting and hand embroidery.
The weave was made from 100% live wool, which the women of the association carded, spun, and dyed themselves. The colors were created with natural dyes such as henna, pomegranate skin, argan shells, saffron and indigo.
The varying piles give this runner beautiful texture and dimension.
