This Hanbel was woven by Naima’s sister-in-laws, aunts and cousins.
Naima is a leader of Association Le Vieux Village, a beautiful collective of women-only artisans located outside of Tazenakht, a town known for its rich weaving history.
This Hanbel was woven with sheep’s wool that has been washed, carded, spun and dyed by the artisans of the association.
The colors were created with natural ingredients like henna, pomegranate skin, saffron, indigo, alfalfa and mint. While the majority of the weave is flat, the designs have a slightly higher pile, giving this piece texture and dimension.
Every design element comes entirely from the artisan’s imagination – the symbols within this rug depict protection from evil, strength, beauty and respect just to name a few.
